2. General Protection Masks

While disposable masks only prevent germs from the wearer from reaching others, KN95 masks protect the wearer itself from germs, pathogens, and other contaminants. These masks are resistant to droplets, splatters, and sprays.

A KN95 mask has some differences from the typical N95 mask:

• Maximum pressure drop for inhalation of a KN95 is 350 pascals, while for an N95 it is 343 pascals.
• Maximum pressure drop for exhalation is 250 pascals for KN95, and 245 pascals for the regular N95.
• Fit is a bit looser compared to the N95, but it’s still tight and seal-forming.
• KN95’s design is a bit larger than the circular cup-shaped N95 mask.

Nevertheless, the KN95 mask is still the most preferred alternative to N95 respirators and is recommended for use in all hospital settings as a mask for coronavirus protection.

4. KF94 Mask

The KF94 mask is a respirator of the same quality as regular N95 masks. However, it is made with Korean standards and criteria.

The KF80 mask is not resistant to oily airborne particles. It actually has a rating that’s similar to a mask rated N by American standards. Hence, the KF80 mask is somewhat similar to the typical N95 mask, albeit offering a bit less protection.

Note that some new variants of KF80 masks have exhalation valves in it. Such valves allow easier breathing and decrease inspiratory pressure. Mask with valves still protects you since the valves do not bring outside air inside the mask. However, keep in mind that some of your breath may get expelled outside through the valve, so if you’re sick, you can’t protect others using a mask with valves.

6. N90 Face Mask

The N90 face mask is an American-standard respirator offering 90% filtering efficiency against tiny airborne particles that do not contain oil. Think of it as a step down from the typical N95 masks that most medical personnel use. It’s NIOSH-approved and US FDA cleared.

N90 masks are made from non-woven fabric interlaced with polypropylene filter fabrics. The N90 face mask forms a tight seal over the nose, mouth, and chin, making it a respirator type of mask. Some variants come with valves for easier breathing, especially the N90 masks designed as kids face mask. However, typical N90 masks for adults are plain with no valves in it.

The N99 face mask is another NIOSH and US FDA-compliant respirator. It’s highly similar to the other N-type mask. But its difference is the ability to filter 99% of large droplets and tiny particulates 0.3 microns in size.

As with other N-type masks, the N99 face mask is made of non-woven fabric and electrostatic polypropylene filters through the melt-blown process.
